Step Up St. Joseph County (Step Up) is an initiative designed to market local community events and resources that can help families become more active and improve their health. Step Up originated in 2015 as a partnership between Sturgis Hospital, Three Rivers Health, Sturgis Chamber of Commerce, Doyle Community Center, BHSJ Community Health Agency, and Community Mental Health & Substance Abuse Services.
Step Up includes a radio broadcast on a featured topic, a monthly health article published in the Sturgis Journal, weekly posts on its Facebook page and a website, stepupsjc.net, where all events are listed and searchable. The website featured upcoming events related to activity/fitness, healthy eating, and medical screenings as well as upcoming music/festivals, area golf outings, and events that offer families fun ways to stay fit.
In 2017, Step Up started its Health Heroes campaign, interviewing locals regarding their health journeys and including their stories on the Step Up website as well.
In November of 2018, the Step Up event calendar merged into the SJC Human Services Commission’s website. Personal health is impacted by many factors including individual health choices, access to employment, housing, literacy, healthy options, early childhood education, and community support systems. A broader calendar of human services was created on the SJC Human Services Commission’s website to include events related to all areas of human services. Health related events and activities formerly found at the Step Up website can now be found at sjchumanservices.com.
